Ski Trip in Meribel Valley, France

Whoa!! What a week!! Rebecca & I spent the last week skiing in France. Ahh... thats not something I thought I would ever be able to say... its just the many wonders of living in Europe!!

We went in a group of 25 people, most of them strangers but not for long. Meribel Valley is a part of "Les 3 Vallee's" (or The 3 Valleys) Ski Resort. There are 3 valleys beside each other (with towns Courchevel, Meribel, Les Menuires & Val Thorens) and with a 3 Valleys Pass (210EUROS for 6days) you can traverse all you like between them. The number of runs is absolutely amazing, you can go by a few days without having to do the same run twice!! One day I decided to hit all 9 peaks in Meribel Valley and it took me the whole day to accomplish that task, jumping on chair lifts, gondolas, button lifts and carving up countless runs with breathtaking views... who can go back to work after a week of this!!! The mountain had spent the previous week under heavy snow fall so it made our trip all that much better. A number of times we actually got stuck in thigh deep snow and had to paddle our way out because there was no way to walk in it!!

While I was up the mountain spraying powder, Rebecca was on a 6day ski-school. Needless to say, she was a bit of a speed demon by the end of it :-) She was doing blue runs no problems and even attempted a red run!!!

And if the skiing wasn't enough, the Apres Ski was definitely there to make you want more. Apres Ski is literally French for "After Ski" and it is simply the drinks and parties that go on at night where you share you stories of embarrasing falls that day etc. Add to that a bunch of Irish mates, its a sure recipe for a good night!!

For those with Google Earth or similar, you can find where we stayed at (45 27'15.25" N, 6 33'38.75" E) and if you zoom in and face due SOUTH EAST you should see Mont du Vallon, Mont de la Chambre etc. These are a couple of the peaks we stood at the top of.

All in all, it was an absolutely amazing week for us. Thanks for the great snow and the fantastic bunch of people. I can't wait for next year!!!

  • Jealousy doesn't even begin to describe it! I am gutted that I didn't get organised enough to skive off work for a week this winter...
