Lanzarote

Lanzarote is definitely not like anywhere else we've been to before. It's a very volcanic island (last eruptions less than 200years ago which rid of almost all of the crops & covered much of the island in lava). Despite the 'moon like' terrain, the island has been a very popular destination for packaged holidays.

Being a holiday island, there are many resorts to stay in (most have a pool), lots of restaurants (at fantastic prices), loads of excursions to do & fantastic beaches. Ontop of this, the whole island is DUTY FREE!!! (€10.25 for a 1litre of Malibu is pretty damn sexy when its €16.75 at the Dublin Airport Duty Free shop)

The highlights of the holiday included a trip to the 'Timafaya' parque nacional - or the fire mountain - where we saw demonstrations of geyser, burning stones and a natural bbq using the heat off the volcano. We even got a ride through the lava flow in the coach and experience the 'moon like' surface. On the way to the 'Timafaya' we stopped off for a bit of Camel riding and it was so much fun!! especially as they get up and sit down while you are sitting on them!! There was one place called 'Jameos del Agua', which is just absolutely beautiful. Its based around a cave made by the lava flow and a lagoon in the cave that is home to these blind white crabs. These crabs' natural habitat is 3000m below the sea and why its here still astounds the scientists who are studying them.

Other highlights included a glass-bottom trip to the nearby island Fuerteventura where sand dunes and lying about took up much of our time. Also a night out at the local Dragshow Venue was interesting too... Rebecca made me go!!

The whole week was thoroughly enjoyed but the thing we enjoyed most, is just lying out in the sun around the pool or on the beach relaxing and doing nothing at all. Its just bliss.

I have to thank Rebecca for this holiday for it was her that won the prize and decided to take me!! how lucky am I!!
